August 2010 – Transferring Offers in DC Metro

If you don’t care where you pick it up, you can transfer frequently and take advantage of different drug store and grocery store deals (and actually earn some great *free* gift cards for pharmacy purchases).

No one in my household currently has prescribed medications, but my sister recently asked me if I knew of any great coupons or deals out there for transferring prescriptions. Here are some of my finds on the best prescription transfer offers that are currently out there in the Northern Virginia/Washington DC metropolitan area.

Rite Aid: There are two printable coupons that are good for a $25 gift card when you transfer a prescription (limit 1 per coupon). So you can transfer up to 2 prescriptions and get a $25 gift card for each. That is $50 in gift cards total! Coupon expires 8/31/10. Offer only valid when prescription is filled and paid for at time of transfer. Transfer offer only valid on any prescription not previously filled at our transferred from other Rite Aid locations.

K-Mart: There is a coupon/form that allows you to get up to 4 K-Mart gift cards of up to $25 each ($100 total), with the transfer of up to 4 prescriptions. Note: *Value of gift card not to exceed the full retail value of the prescription. Coupon expires 9/25/10.

Walgreens: If you live near a newly opened Walgreens (it seem like a ton of them have been popping up in Northern VA), ask at the pharmacy desk if they have a $25 check or gift card offer when you transfer over a prescription. I recently saw this at the new Walgreens on Eastern Marketplace Plaza in Chantilly, VA and two new locations in Manasass, VA (on Hoadly Road and on Sudley Road) but the coupon just expired last week.

CVS: According to my local CVS pharmacist, they accept competitor coupons for these offers. Please be sure to call ahead to your local CVS to confirm.

Giant Food: According to my local pharmacist told me that they accept competitor’s coupons. Please be sure to call ahead to your local Giant to confirm.

Wegmans: According to the pharmacist at the Leesburg, VA location, they currently have a promotion (at the Leesburg store only) for a $20 coupon off a future grocery purchase, for new prescription customers/transfers at their pharmacy. With the transfer or start of a new prescription, they will give you a punch card, and each time you refill you get another punch. Each punch equals another $20 gift card, with a limit of up to 5 $20 gift cards total. This offer expires 09/30/10.

Harris Teeter: According to the pharmacist at the (fairly new) Fairfax, VA location, they’ve had a promotion that ends this month for a $20 coupon off a future grocery purchase, for new prescription/transfers at their pharmacy (please note this offer is only good at the Fairfax – Pender Campus Store, and to qualify you cannot transfer a prescription from another Harris Teeter store). Limit of up to 10 $20 off coupons/gift cards. This offer expires 08/31/10.  My local pharmacist said that they also accept competitor coupons. Please call your local Harris Teeter to confirm.

Safeway: According to a pharmacist at the Bristow, VA store, there was apparently a recent mailing sent out to certain areas with a postcard coupon for a $30 gift card when you transfer a prescription to Safeway. Unfortunately this coupon is not in the weekly circular.

If you know of any other prescription or prescription transfer offers currently going on in the Washington, DC Metro area please post a comment and let me know!

Thanks for this post, Laura! My little one got sick last night, and I checked it before we went to the doctor. We ended getting the $20 worth of free groceries voucher at Wegmans, and you can earn up to $100 with additional prescriptions!

Hi Liz,
So glad my post helped you out in choosing where to get your last-minute prescription for your daughter! And I’m glad that the Wegmans near you has that great offer, especially since I know you are an avid Wegmans shoppers and report their best deals each week. I have to admit, I love their everyday low prices on family pack meat and my son loves the train that goes around the track at the top of the store.
Hope your daughter is feeling better soon!

Awww… Man!!! I checked Giant and Wegmans, but I didn’t check with Harris Teeter!!! I just filled 3 prescriptions for my daughter on 8/30 and didn’t get anything out of them! :-(

I am really surprised HT didn’t advertise in their store at all this time around. When they had this offer last time (last December I think), they had flyers all over the store (and I got two $20 out of them). I go to HT Pender Campus on a weekly basis and I didn’t see any ad.

Thanks for putting together the list! I just wish I had read it sooner.

Thanks for the comment Selene!
Sorry that you didn’t see this earlier. I’m trying to compile an updated list of current (September 2010) prescription offers here in the DC metro area and will try and post it in the next week.

Hi Laura.
I just found out about your site and am loving it!

I was wondering if you know of any pharmacy coupons that will give gift card with new prescription. My prescription will expire the 20th so I need to move fast!

Leesburg is ways from me!

Hi Sherry,
Thanks for the comment! I’ll try to compile a list of updated prescription offers for this month and post it in the next few days.
There is an updated coupon for the $25 Gift Card offer from RiteAid that expires on 9/30/10 here:
If your current prescription is through RiteAid, you can take the coupon to CVS or another pharmacy that accepts competitor coupons. That’s probably the best current offer, but I’ll research some more and write a post in the next week.
