Shoppers Food New Nutrition IQ Program & GIVEAWAY!

As a “frugal” shopper, I often struggle with staying within our budget and eating “healthier” … don’t get me wrong, I feel like we eat somewhat healthy in my  household because I make most meals from scratch, but I guess I’m saying that I don’t normally buy whole wheat flour, whole wheat pasta, organic milk, organic veggies, or fancy gourmet peanut butter. However, I do think that eating healthier is something that I would like to focus more on in the future and believe it is important to watch what type of food we fuel our bodies.

Earlier this month I had the pleasure of attending a local DC Metro bloggers event held by Shoppers Food promoting their new Nutrition IQ Program. Since I love to share grocery store deals on my blog, I thought you readers might be interested in hearing about a new program at one of our local DC area grocery stores… plus there’s a giveaway involved! *CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED*

First a little bit about the program: You may notice new green tags as you walk the aisles of your local Shoppers Food Warehouse. These tags are a part of the new Nutrition IQ Program to help you quickly identify healthier products during your grocery shopping.  The Joslin Clinic collaborated with SuperValu stores (including Shoppers) to develop this program and screen grocery products available in their store. Products are screened based on limited levels of sodium, saturated fat and in some categories, sugar. Along with these qualifying criteria, they have used the FDA Nutrient Content Claims to identify up to two key nutrients that contribute to a healthy diet.

The NiQ signs hang below the product to the right of the normal price tag (see photo below, and yes! Frosted Mini Wheats cereal is an excellent source of Whole Grains and Fiber!). The lime green NiQ tags identify up to 2 categories of key nutrients:

  • (low) Calorie
  • (low) Saturated Fats

To promote their new program and healthier shopping, Shoppers gave me a $25 gift card and I decided to give it away to one special blog reader! To enter this contest, you must do one of the following (you may enter up to one time per entry method). Each counts as a separate entry: *CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED*

  1. Leave a comment telling me what difficulties you encounter when trying to shop healthier for you and/or your family
  2. Subscribe via email and leave a comment letting me know that you did (if you already have an email subscription let me know in the comments and that counts as an entry)
  3. Subscribe via a Reader and leave a comment letting me know that you did (or that you already subscribe)
  4. Follow me on Twitter and leave a comment letting me know

All entries must be received by 11:59 PM ET on Friday, June 4th, 2010. Winner will be randomly selected and announced shortly thereafter. I will mail the $25 gift card anywhere within the continental US, but ask that you please only enter if you are in the US and plan to use this at a local Shoppers Food in VA, MD, DC.

UPDATE: CONGRATULATIONS TO SARA (COMMENT #16), YOU’VE WON THE CONTEST!

Disclosure: After attending the Shoppers local blogger event, I was given a bag of some sample healthy groceries as well as the $25 gift card which I have decided to give away. The opinions expressed in this article are my own.
