Looking for a fun activity with dazzling holiday lights, animals and fun for both kids and adults in DC?  Then you have to check out ZooLights at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, DC! ZooLights is an annual FREE event at the zoo, featuring festive holiday lights – in the shape of animals – and other attractions which draw thousands of visitors each year. This year’s ZooLights opened November 25th, 2011 and runs through January 1st, 2012. Now until Dec. 11th you can catch the light display and festivities from 5pm – 9pm only on Friday, Saturday & Sunday, but starting Dec. 16th you can catch it every evening from 5pm-9pm (with the exception of Dec. 24th, 25th & 31st).

You’ve probably gotten the chance to visit the zoo during the day while living here in DC, but ZooLights is a fun opportunity for you to see the National Zoo in a whole new light! You can enjoy attractions and entertainment such as Panda Claws, live concerts, a model train and the chance to see the Small Mammal House, Great Ape House, Reptile Discovery Center, Think Tank, and Kids’ Farm after dusk! There are also additional paid-events that sound like a lot of fun: Train Ride ($3 per person), Ice Skating ($5 per half hour and $2 for skate rental), plus food & beverage at the Maine Restaurant. Also, parking is $9 for FONZ (Friends of the National Zoo) members and $16 for non-members. All proceeds from ZooLights concessions and parking sales will go towards the Zoo wildlife conservation programs and initiatives.
