Food Lion has been around since 1957 with a strong focus on quality groceries & low prices! In the Baltimore area they’ve had a presence in the grocery industry for 20 years. Washingtonians were re-introduced to the Food Lion brand when about a year and a half ago, local Bloom & Bottom Dollar stores were converted into Food Lion stores. Since Food Lion reopened here in Northern Virginia, I honestly hadn’t stepped foot in the door, but was interested to attend this Frugal Cook-Off event and learn more about Food Lion, which I remember shopping at only a few times back in 2003-2004 as a new college graduate, independent and entering the “real world.” After this event and learning more about Food Lion stores here in our area, I’m looking forward to shopping there!

I go to meet some top executives and the marketing team from Food Lion plus hear about their company values and commitment to help Baltimore & DC residents enjoy quality foods on a budget. I particularly was excited to hear about their fresh-from-the-farm Food Lion brand products and their double money back guarantee. I also learned about Food Lion’s My Essentials store brand products which were created to provide consumers with high quality products at low prices, helping you feed your family well on a budget.

For the Frugal Cook-Off Challenge, teams unveiled their secret protein from: Boneless Chicken Breast (1 lb), Ground Turkey Meat (1 lb), Boneless Pork Chops (1 lb) and Frozen Tilapia (6 pieces) and then were given time to “shop” the My Essentials products and fresh produce to create our dish.

I was teamed up with fantastic, foodie blogger teammates, Dara from Dara-Does-It.com and John from Grilling24x7, and together with our surprise selection of Ground Turkey we created Vietnamese Turkey Lettuce Wraps for under $15. Even though our dish didn’t win the grand prize, we got rave reviews from the judges and succeeded in making a frugal yet delicious meal.
