Today is the first day of summer, and for many local Northern VA and DC-area school kids it also marks the first weekday of summer vacation!

Many local libraries are starting their summer reading programs this week. Even infants and toddlers can often participate (check with your local library) by having their parents read to them and keep track of their book list. My 4-year old son and I have enjoyed our county’s summer reading program (including weekly coupons and prizes!) in the past, and plan to sign up again this week. Here’s a run down of some of the local Northern Virginia summer reading programs through different county public library systems:

Besides your local library, there are many book stores holding summer reading programs and incentives! Check out the Moneywise Moms post here on the 2010 summer reading programs which includes stores like Barnes & Noble and Borders.

Also, according to Money Saving Mom, TD Bank (for current and new TD Bank customers only) and Pottery Barn Kids are also holding summer reading programs or book clubs for kids!

Happy reading!
